"I want to suggest [a sparkler] for your last-minute Valentine’s Day purchase, a very, very local and very, very delicious one — The Berryessa Gap Brut Rosé. Part of BG’s new Highway 128 collection (“a series of wines created in partnership with respected growers and producers along the historic, scenic wine route”), this bottle is a traditional Champagne blend of pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot meunier — all from the North Coast AVA.
An added incentive to write about this sparkler came from a reader who wrote, “$40 a bottle … I complained but then I drank it — no complaints … Do yourself a favor and try a bottle, you may want to get a few for Valentine’s Day!” My wine budget doesn’t extend as far as “a few,” but the one bottle I drank really did live up to her assessment. Bright, fresh, bursting with berry and citrus, it’s nevertheless quite restrained and elegant. And I was mesmerized by the persistent tiny bubbles that just kept bursting through the surface and making a perfectly ordinary occasion seem wonderfully festive. I paired it with a sauteed rapini-and-pasta dish, and the two seemed as happy together as Valentine lovers — I suspect it would go with almost anything." -Susan Leonardi, Wineaux - Davis Enterprise
